Day Trips from Timișoara
Wine country, fortresses, and thermal springs within an hour
Timișoara earns its own stay — but the region around it deserves at least a day. Within an hour's drive in any direction, the western Romanian landscape unfolds into wine country, fortress towns, thermal springs, and a countryside that moves at a pace the city has long since left behind.
The closest and most accessible escape is Recaș — barely twenty minutes southeast of the city. This is wine country, and it's serious. The Recaș winery produces some of Romania's most respected wines, and their tasting room welcomes visitors with a generosity that borders on insistence. The surrounding hills are striped with vineyards, the soil is perfect, and the wines — particularly the whites and the local Fetească Neagră — are genuinely excellent. Book a tasting, tour the cellars, and stay for lunch in the vineyard restaurant.
Lipova, forty minutes northeast, offers something completely different. This small town on the Mureș river is dominated by the ruins of Șoimoș Fortress — a medieval stronghold perched on a cliff that looks like it was placed there by a film location scout. The climb to the fortress is steep but short, and the view from the top takes in the river valley and the Zarand Mountains beyond. The town itself has a sleepy charm, with a few good places to eat and an Orthodox monastery worth visiting.
Buziaș, thirty minutes southeast, is Romania's answer to the spa towns of Bohemia — though far less discovered. Natural thermal and mineral springs have attracted visitors since the 18th century. The park is elegant in a faded, old-world way, and the thermal baths offer the kind of hot-spring relaxation that makes you wonder why you spend so much time in cities. The bottled Buziaș mineral water is famous throughout Romania — here you can drink it at the source.
For those willing to drive a bit further, Sâmbăta de Sus monastery sits at the foot of the Făgăraș Mountains — about two and a half hours away but worth every kilometer. The monastery, founded by Constantin Brâncoveanu in the 17th century and rebuilt after communist destruction, is a masterpiece of Brâncovenesc style: white walls, carved stone columns, and painted porticos set against a backdrop of the highest mountains in Romania.
The roads in western Romania are good and getting better. A rental car opens everything up, but organized day trips from Timișoara are also available through local tour operators. The key insight is this: Timișoara isn't just a destination. It's a base camp.
